Richard Russo and Nick Hornby
Readers of this blog might be interested to know that, after a suggestion from a contributor - I picked up a book from Nick Hornby and a book from Richard Russo. I'm happy to report that yes, they are exactly what I'm talking about when I talk about 'flawed characters'.

Using My Words
Actually - a Nick Hornby omnibus that contains "Fever Pitch", "High Fidelity" and "About a Boy". I also picked up "The Whore's Child" by Richard Russo. Not every short story blows me away but he's got his character-building down pretty solid.
Nick Hornby seems to be drawing from roughly the same cat every time. Late 20s - early 30s, single, not a lot of focus and direction. He's still got good yarns, don't get me wrong. I just wouldn't plan on pumping the same well if I were he.
But then, I have no business criticizing until I've sold as much material :)
I just read your post at Indie Bloggers. Wow. That's all I have to say about it. I'll reread it today while I'm at work to see what I missed the first go-round.
Have you read "A Long Way Down" by Nicholas Hornby? It's different from his other books in that there are many main characters, and they're quite diverse. At least I think so anyway.
:-)
Beth -
I'm putting all responses to "No Good Deed" here...
